Stephen Medcalf's glorious production of 'The Marriage of Figaro' opened the 1994 season, and the new opera house, at Glyndebourne. It tells the story of the young, engaged couple Figaro and Susanna, and the comedy of romantic fiascos involving the Count and Countess Almaviva, Dr Bartolo and his housekeeper Marcellina, the page Cherubino, and the gardener’s daughter, Barbarina. American soprano Renee Fleming stars as the Countess who plans to re-kindle her husband's love. Figaro and Susanna, whose marriage plans go through many tribulations, are sung by Gerald Finley and Alison Hagley.
