Johnny Vaughan and his mudlarking guide and buddy, "Mud God" Steve Brooker, are on a muddy archaeological adventure, digging up the banks of the Thames to reveal our astonishing hidden history. Armed with metal detectors and trowels - the pair have just five hours before the tide rushes in to wade, search and dig the banks of the River Thames finding artefacts, from medieval chain mail to WW2 artillery shells and Tudor trading tokens to cursed Bellarmine pots. The extraordinary objects that they find propel them on quests through the streets of London and around the country to unlock the secrets of our remarkable shared British past. The River Thames has supported London for thousands of years - as a major site for trade, crime, industry, war, for food, drink, death and debauchery, and even as the capitals rubbish bin. Today, Britain's most iconic river is one of the worlds richest archaeological sites, but only registered mudlarks are allowed to excavate the Thames foreshore. Now, mudlark Steve Brooker has agreed to show Johnny the tricks of the trade and in every episode they set about recovering the important "rubbish" and lost items of history from the thick black mud that has enveloped them to reveal a unique and original perspective on the way our ancestors lived.
