Four fifty-year-old friends, who have spent their whole lives together, spend the day organising heavy jokes to make fun of each other. They are the journalist Giorgio Perozzi (Philippe Noiret), persecuted for the re-probation of his son and his ex-wife; the architect Rambaldo Melandri (Gastone Moschin), sensitive to matters of the heart; the bartender Guido Necchi (Duilio Del Prete), owner of the bar where the group meets every night; and Count Mascetti, a fallen nobleman, forced to live in a basement, who has no scruples about taking his wife and daughter away to enjoy a clandestine relationship with his young lover, Titti (Silvia Dionisio). All of them, aware that it helps them stay together, resort to jokes to prolong their youth and defend themselves from the pains of life.
