Set in the dark Middle Ages, young, unruly Goldmund (Jannis Niewöhner) is sent to a monastery by his father to atone for the sins of his mother, who abandoned them. It is there that he meets Narcissus (Sabin Tambrea), a brilliant, scholarly novice, who is introverted and aloof. But in this strange environment a unique and deep life-long friendship is born. As they grow into young men Narcissus chooses to remain detached from the world in prayer and meditation and devotes his life to the monastery and God. But Goldmund, who is passionate, sensual and impulsive, runs away from the monastery to live a life of adventure embracing everything that life throws at him, from battle, to finding true love, to suffering loss. Years later Goldmund's journey finds him imprisoned and facing certain death after being accused of infidelity with the Duke's wife but can Narcissus now save his friend and restore his faith.
