Manchester United came to the Sports Direct Arena intent on securing victory in order to ignite their league title challenge but an inspired Newcastle United performance led to a very different outcome and a memorable night on Tyneside. Thanks to the decisive leadership of Alan Pardew, together with simply brilliant team performance led by Demba Ba and Yohan Cabaye, the reigning Champions were trounced 3-0 on what will be remembered as a sensational night. It was the Magpies first league victory over Manchester United in a decade and it was fully deserved as the team dominated in every area of the pitch. The first goal of the night came from Ba as he picked up Ameobi s flick and hooked his shot past Lindegaard, notching up his 15th of the season and sending the Newcastle United faithful into raptures. Having quickly stifled any threat from the likes of Rooney and Berbatov, Newcastle doubled the lead just after half time as Yohan Cabaye expertly curled in a 30 yard free-kick before the final goal, coming as a result of a long ball from Krul, which landed deep in the opposition box, and landing awkwardly for defender Phil Jones who put it past his own keeper to complete the rout and send the champions home with a lesson learned.
