Synopsis:
2012-2013 was another rollercoaster season for Newcastle United, and how many times have we said that. The Magpies couldn t match their 2011/12 finishing position of fifth, slipping down to 16th come the end of the season, but an excellent Europa League campaign had the club back amongst some of the best in Europe, and there was also, at times, much to applaud in the Premier League campaign including exciting victories over Tottenham and Chelsea at St. James Park. United invested wisely in the January transfer window, drafting in five highly talented players from the French Ligue 1, and it was largely due to this squad strengthening that the Magpies avoided falling through the trap door back into the Championship. Alan Pardew s side were hard hit by injuries throughout a difficult season but rallied when they had to and the points they picked up on the road in the last few weeks of the season eventually saw them reach the 40-point mark and with it, safety, a chance to put 2012/13 behind them and the opportunity to build for the next campaign.
