When Mae West went to Hollywood in the early 1930's, she was already a major star. Having sensationalised Broadway, it was time for the movies to receive the same.
Night After Night (1932) Screen greats George Raft and Mae West tar in the Pre-Code drama 'Night After Night', about a speakeasy owner with a colorful past. Joe Anton (Raft), an ex-thug intent on losing his street-smart manner, hires a proper spinster named Mabel (Alison Skipworth) to accompany him and Miss Healy (Constance Cummings) to dinner at his swanky establishment. Complicating matters, his flamboyant ex-girlfriend, Maudie Triplett (West), breezes over to their table and innocently begins to expose Joe's past. Making her screen debut, Mae West delighted audiences with her wit, beauty and charm, thus launching her career as one of the most unforgettable Hollywood icons of all time.
She Done Him Wrong (1933) Set in the 1890's, West plays a brash barroom entertainer with a soft spot for men in trouble, especially the mission director, young Cary Grant. She unknowingly gets caught up in a murder, as well as a white slavery ring, and sets about clearing things up as only Mae can. In between rescues she manages to perform some of her heated, hip-swinging classics including a steamy belting of "Frankie and Johnnie". Dripping in gems and low cut splendour, Mac is a delight for all of the senses. No one comes close to this lady's style of pure brazen wit and suggestive invitations to "Come up some time and see me?"
