Rent O Thou Transcendent: The Life of Ralph Vaughan Williams (2007)

At last a film that begins to do justice to England's greatest composer, positioning him as so much more than the author of A Lark Ascending and "Greensleeves"; a complex and troubling portrayal of a complex and often troubled man. If I withhold a final star it's because arguably Palmer over-eggs the pudding with gratuitous imagery designed to reinforce the message about the serious and sombre tone of some of the composers weightiest music; I'm not sure that film of starving children illuminates either the music or the plight of those seen. Nevertheless, a very strong recommendation.
