Aside from the fact it isn’t that funny, this film’s biggest failing is the choice of Seth Rogen in the lead role of Ronnie. If you’ve ever seen Jody Hill’s previous film ‘The Foot Fist Way’ and his TV series ‘Eastbound & Down’ you’ll know how actor Danny McBride portrays the lead characters and the clever way he delivers Jody Hill’s dialogue. The trouble is in ‘Observe and Report’ Seth Rogen basically does an 83 minute impression of Danny McBride, and not only does he completely rip off another actors acting style and delivery, he does it badly to boot. If you’ve not seen the very funny ‘The Foot Fist Way’ or the superb TV series ‘Eastbound & Down’ rent them instead and give this a miss.
To be fair this isn't as terrible as Paul Blart Mall Cop, which was dire. Yet it isn't much better and features many common themes and gags, whilst thankfully less offensive. If you want to see a flasher running around displaying his tackle for all to see, then this is an ideal rental. Predictable, lacking in laughs and overall a tiresome experience you have to question what happened to the comedy genre.
