Synopsis:
La Grande-Duchesse de Gerolstein marks the summit of Offenbach¿s career - a merciless satire on militarism that predated the Franco-Prussian war by just three years and was seen by Napoleon III, Bismarck and Tsar Alexander II. For the sell-out performances at the Chatelet in Paris in December 2004 Marc Minkowski worked with director Laurent Pelly, recreating the team responsible for the wildly popular La Belle Helene. An otherwise all-French cast is led by Dame Felicity Lott¿s stylish and sparkling Duchess, with Francois Le Roux as General Boum and Yann Beuron as the hapless soldier Fritz.
