It is 1917 in the town of Wharton, Texas. On Valentine's Day young Elizabeth Vaughn (Hallie Foote) defies her wealthy parents and shocks her community by running away and marrying a young man from the wrong side of the tracks. Taking a room in a house of an impoverished family, Elizabeth and her new husband strike up a new life away from luxury and Wharton's disapproving townspeople. As their lives intertwine with their fellow borders the newlyweds find support from those around them as they embark on their new journey together. Based on the story of Horton Foote's mother and father, 'On Valentine's Day' is about the unselfish love of a man and a woman, about the abiding love within a family, about the emptiness of living without love - all enduring themes of human existence.
