Does anyone else remember a time before ridiculous talent shows? When artists had to make it to the top of their field through sheer hard graft and determination? Many younger members of the audience most likely do not, and perhaps this film is therefore aimed more towards them. And as much as I’m a fan of the manufactured and over emotional sounds of a good boy band, I grew up on the Backstreet Boys and practiced signing my name with the surname of every member of Blue, I can’t help but be a little put out by the idea of a “boy band movie”.
Gone are the days when the mini stalker in all teenage girls had to indulge themselves in snippets from the back of Top of the Pops magazine or a five minute interview on Live and Kicking; celebrities are everywhere and the proliferation of franchise material such as the One Direction: This is Us documentary only adds fuel to the fire of teenage mass hysteria.
Ultimately I can’t say I found out anything particularly interesting or intimate about Harry, Niall, Zyan, Liam or Louis and even now am not sure I could accurate join each name to its respective owner. What I can tell you however is that this documentary is going to be a must have for any One Direction fans Christmas stocking.
