Synopsis:
Only in America highlights some of the more unusual sports to be found in the USA. Pack Burro Racing continues a great sport begun by some of Colorado's 19th-century miners. Those hardy characters used burros (Spanish for donkeys) to carry their mining tools and supplies through the Rocky Mountains as they prospected for gold, silver, and other valuable ores. Since the burros were carrying a full load, the miners had to walk, leading the animal with a rope. Legend has it that two miners found gold in the same location, and raced each other back to town to be the first to stake a claim to the find. Neither could ride their animal because of its load, so one of the basic rules of burro racing was established! This exclusive DVD presentation introduces viewers to Pack Burro Racing who may be surprised to discover that not only is there an annual World Championship race but also the opportunity to win the Triple Crown! To win this prestigious honour competitors must win each of the annual races in Leadville, Buena Vista, and Fairplay Colorado In each race, which is part of a Burro Days' celebration racers and burros have to run up to 29 miles, climbing up to 13,000 feet. Burros must wear a pack with traditional mining gear, weighing in at 35 pounds, and the burro must be led the entire race by a halter attached to a rope not more than 15 feet long. Simple to understand, very difficult to accomplish because the burro is a stubborn animal, this makes for interesting "racing." And, who knows? Having watched this DVD you may feel crazy enough to take your vacation in Colorado and attempt to win the Triple Crown yourself
