Othello, Lord of Cyprus and head of the Venetian fleet, married to the young Desdemona is instigated by Iago, his ensign, jealous for his appointment as captain of Cassius, to believe that between his wife and the captain there is a relationship. The proof is a handkerchief that Iago, subtracted from Desdemona, Cassio has seat in the house, and that Othello sees in the hands of the rival during a conversation engineered by Iago to show his master the infidelity of his wife.
