Synopsis:
On the French Polynesian island of Tahiti, the High Commissioner of the French Republic De Roller (Benoît Magimel) is a calculating man with flawless manners. His somewhat broad perception of his role brings him to navigate the high-end establishment as well as shady venues where he mingles with the locals. Especially since a persistent rumour has been going around: the sighting of a submarine whose ghostly presence could herald the return of French nuclear testing.

French Dr Strangelove? - Pacifiction review by CH

Spoiler Alert

Initially quite a gripping understated  film…..but about 90 minutes in I wondered if I should definitely know by now, who this collection of malingering characters are and how relevant or irrelevant are they to the plot? I lost the plot altogether during the final blue lit cabaret scene….was everyone on drugs? Was some unseen overlord spiking their green juice? Too obscure, surreal and clever for me to follow.

Slippery and elusive - Pacifiction review by AER

Spoiler Alert
13/06/2024

This film is nearly 3 hours long and contains enough plot to sustain a film half its length. Reminiscent of David Lynch, this peculiar film set in Tahitii depicts paranoia, power plays and mystery to great effect, dso much so that I was left in the dark. It tried my patience in the last 30 minutes as it seems to wantonly abandon much of the plot or logic - but it comes back at the end and it works well on reflection as you begin to understand this portrait of maniacal evil. Unique but a difficult customer nonetheless.
