The sublime heights of love and sacrifice of such classic legends as Laila-Majnu and Shirin-Farhad breathe fire and soul into "Palki" the intense love story of a poor young poet Naseem (Rajendra Kumar) and his beloved Mehru (Waheeda Rehman), who lived in Lucknow...Their only hope of getting married is the prize-money which Naseem wins at a Mushaira held by the wealthy, aristocratic - Nawab Mirza (Rehman). But the poet had refused that money because of a humiliation which he suffered at the Mushaira. Swearing not to consummate the marriage until he earns the money and repays it, Naseem comes to Bombay. It was the year 1944 when in the Great Explosion Naseem is given up for dead. But home Mehroo, now completely unhinged, is remarried to the Nawab himself! A strange twist of Fate brings Naseem back to Lucknow to live under the very roof of. the Nawab! Meliroo learns that Naseem is alive. The Nawab learns that his new wife is actually the wife of the poet...?
