Biopic from director Julien Temple about the relationship between the Romantic poets Samuel Taylor Coleridge (Linus Roache) and William Wordsworth (John Hannah). Meeting in the ferment of late-18th century radical politics, the two aspiring writers become firm friends and occasional rivals. Moving to the country with his wife Sarah (Samantha Morton), Coleridge is joined by Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy (Emily Woof). While the rigours of country living takes its toll on the struggling poets, Coleridge starts making increasing use of laudanum as an aid to composition, eventually producing his masterpiece 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. As Coleridge becomes more famous than his friend, and falls deeper into opium addiction, their relationship begins to deteriorate.
