The Eastern front began to break down at the beginning of 1944. Although the German tanks were superior, the Russians had greater numbers and started to take the upper hand and Hitler's ground troops were unable to compensate for this despite their tactical skills. By autumn 1944 the Red Army were at the door to East Prussia and defensive battles became harder. The makeshift Panzer tank units fought the best they could against the overwhelming Red Army. Millions of East Germans then fled to Danzig, where it was then possible by sea or land to escape to the West.
