Pascual Duarte (José Luis Gómez) is a Spanish farmer, a poacher, who from a very young age has experienced the violence of an abrupt father and an alcoholic mother who returned beatings to her husband. Shortly before the Republic was established, Pascual married Lola (Maribel Ferrero), the girl he had always been in love with. But Pascual's happiness is ephemeral. The mule in which Lola travels the strip and the newly married dies. Pascual, full of fury, kills the mule. Meanwhile his sister, Rosario (Diana Pérez de Guzmán), who had returned to the village, is going to get her boyfriend, a pimp they call El Estirao (Joaquín Hinojosa). When El Estirao wants to take Rosario back to Trujillo, Pascual shoots him with his shotgun. The precarious environment prior to the Civil War has reached the field, where Don Jesus must dispense with many of his workers leading to the most absolute misery. At night Pascual carefully cleans his shotgun before beginning his last bloody journey.
