Deeply flawed twisty thriller - Passion review by TJ

Spoiler Alert
31/01/2016

Passion contains the usual Brian De Palma themes - long tracking shots, lots of POV, split-screen and a twisty, suspense thriller - it certainly looks great too, particularly the noir-style blue hue scenes. Unfortunately the acting here is a little hammy, particularly from Paul Anderson, and the plot struggles through some rather awkward, clunky developments. The other big problem is we simply don't know enough about the characters to justify their decisions or behaviour at times.

Once Passion gets going however, it's a decent, though heavily flawed, who-done-it, but if you're a fan of De Palma, or of these kinds of films, I would recommend Raising Cain instead, with John Lithgow. Even the biggest De Palma fan will be underwhelmed here.
