Paul Robeson is an incredible presence in these films-the camera loves him- and his singing ability is divine. But I felt so sorry he had such poor material to work with. The films in this series are very offensive, and caricature Africans as primitive, cruel, childlike savages, especially the chiefs.
This cariacture, of course, bolstered British colonial fantasies. The only advice I have is to regard the films as historical artefacts and be amazed by Robeson' s talent.
