This film sees the world premiere recording of Penderecki's first opera The Devils of Loudun, filmed shortly after it's world premiere in 1969 at the Hamburg State Opera. This film adaptation, recorded in the same year shortly after the premiere, reunified the original cast including the wonderful Tatiana Troyanos. The plot, based on the book by Aldous Huxley, explores subjects including sexuality, religion, fanaticism and justice in a deep and sometimes disturbing series of powerful scenes. It is no surprise therefore that film director William Friedkin also chose to use the music in his film "The Exorcist".
