- After launching his career as a dubious contender with no pedigree, Australian racehorse Phar Lap stunned the world as he began winning. But when scores of gamblers started betting on his reputation, they lost hundreds of thousands of dollars. The thoroughbred's subsequent death after winning a key race sparked debate about whether foul play was involved and whether gambling interests were to blame.
