Ummagumma is a transitional album marking the end of the space rock/pastoral phase of Pink Floyd before the band moved on to the epic soundscapes of Atom Heart Mother and Meddle.
The title of the album is pronounced by the band ''ooma-gooma'' by the band, and it is not just pronunciation which presents difficulties in approaching this curious album. Ummagumma still today splits the world of Floyd supporters into those who love the work and those who feel that much of it is frankly unlistenable?
In this penetrating independent review narrated by Bob Harris, we hear the views of the band in retrospect contrasted with the views of the album's Executive Producer, Norman Smith. The film draws on extensive rare footage of Pink Floyd in performance of material from Ummagumma to produce the most frank, comprehensive and forthright review of a landmark in rock history.
