The action centers around the end of the 19th century. Policarpo De Tappetti (Renato Rascel) is a calligrapher who works under the orders of Don César Pancarano de Rondò (Luigi De Filippo). For many years now, Policarpo has been looking for a promotion and a salary increase that never came, and, it seems, will never come. One day Jerome, the son of Don Cesar, meets Celeste, the daughter of Polycarp, and falls in love with her. Polycarp sees in this relationship the solution to his aspirations at work, and he does everything in his power to make that relationship fruitful. Don César, who presumes to be count, sees with very bad eyes that his son sees with a girl of so different social position, and does just the opposite. But the efforts made by both parties will not work, as Celeste has fallen in love with Mario Marquetti (Renato Salvatori), a "mechanic" who is giving him private lessons in the offices of the entrepreneur Franquinet ...
