It's summer 1994, an ex-mining village just outside Doncaster. Trevor (Tom Varey) sits at Decoy Ponds, hoping to catch a glimpse of Nessie, the carp of local legend. Misfit Pogo (Esme Creed-Miles) wanders around town with a cassette recorder, taping broken fragments of the world around her. Lovesick Malcolm (Angus Imrie) is trying to mend his broken heart, while best friends Shane (Gianluca Gallucci) and David (Ethan Wilkie) have nothing better to do. Wonderful performances especially from Esme Creed-Miles. Pond Life really struck a chord with me the setting being quite close to home and the era matching my own childhood brought back a flood of memories. Highly recommend.

Set in an ex mining community this is a gem of a film about growing up in the mid-1990s. The acting is superb and the story is caring and compassionate to its characters. Don't miss it!

Not about newts and toads - Pond Life review by HE

Thoroughly enjoyed this film-simply told as a day and a night in the life of this ex-mining community. The acting from the various characters was so good. I especially enjoyed the little boy on the bicycle trying to find someone-anyone-to play with! Quite gritty in parts, it was nonetheless a rare film. I think you could watch more than once and still appreciate it.
