The most successful season in Portsmouth's modern era was celebrated in style as the team rose to a remarkable league standing and lifted The FA Cup for the first time since 1939. The improvement was there to see and the football played was the like that has not been seen on the South Coast since the back to back Championship wins in the 48/49 and 49/50 seasons. A truly remarkable achievement and a landmark season for Pompey. It was a season of change as players left and exciting new talent joined the dub; after a great start to the season the club bid farewell to Benjani but welcomed Jermain Defoe to the South Coast; Sulley Muntari, John Utaka and Hermann Hreidarsson all made an impact in their first season at Fratton Park. There were many highlights, lifting the coveted FA Cup aside; the club enjoyed one of the greatest games in Premier League history as they went toe-to-toe against Reading in an eleven goal thriller that left everyone breathless; the defeat of Manchester United at the Theatre of Dreams will be remembered by many as the game that contributed most to the clubs FA Cup success, and then there was the goal scoring exploits of Benjani before Christmas and then Jermain Defoe from February to the end of the season. Both setting the league alight and becoming heroes in the stands at Fratton Park. It is a season that will live long in memory of everyone associated with the club and every goal and every game from this incredible season can be enjoyed and savoured as the club prepare for their first European adventure.
