Synopsis:
Puccini's trio of mini-masterpieces, Il Trittico, features a melodrama (Il Tabarro), a sentimental piece (Suor Angelica) and finally a comedy (Gianni Schicchi). These three one-act operas feature some of the composer's most beautiful music. Puccini's passionate and ruggedly realistic opera Il Tabarro (The cloak) is a tale of deception and murder along the banks of the Seine. Piero Cappuccilli is the Parisian bargeman Michele, Slyvia Sass his wife Giorgetta, and her lover Luigi is played by Nicola Martinucci. In this production of Suor Angelica, British soprano Rosalind Plowright made her La Scala debut as the tragic Sister Angelica. Plowright and Dunja Vejzovich (her unforgiving aunt, the Principessa) give hauntingly memorable performances. The comic Gianni Schicchi features Juan Pons as the wily character of the title. Recorded in 1983 at La Scala, Milan. Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro alla Scala, Milan conducted by Gianandrea Gavazzeni.
