In this fascinating series, Sir Trevor McDonald looks at the traditions and institutions surrounding the monarchy - from Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace to counting The Queens swans on the River Thames.
1. London: Royal City
Trevor McDonald reports on the tradition of Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace and visits Horseguards to meet the man in charge of the troops who guard The Queen.
2. Royal VisitWe follow The Queen to Liverpool for a one-day visit, the sort of regional trip that happens every week but attracts little publicity, and to Scotland where, every summer, she breaks her holiday at Balmoral to attend the Braemar Gathering.
3. The Queen's Possessions
The Queen has some surprising possessions, among them Westminster Abbey and the Chapels Royal. She also owns the Tower of London 'in right of crown'. Then there are the Channel Islands, which are known as 'peculiars of the crown' and owe their allegiance not to Westminster but direct to the monarch. To celebrate that relationship Jersey has commissioned a portrait of Elizabeth II - as a hologram.
4. Traveller
The Queen is the most travelled head-of-state of all time. She presides over the Commonwealth. In Australia, we observe The Queen on tour before she opens the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth.- Actors:
