In 1988, the RAC Rally produced one of the most exciting and unpredictable events in its illustrious history. An impressively strong line-up of top drivers and leading manufacturers gathered in Harrogate for five days of the toughest rally competition over 52 snow and ice-covered stages. Fewer than half the crews would make the finish. Juha Kankkunen in the Toyota Celica GT-4 and Markku Alen's Lancia Delta Integrale started the final round of the World Rally Championship as favourites. However, the Mazda pairing of Timo Salonen and Hannu Mikkola, the Ford Sierra Cosworths of Stig Blomqvist and Dai Llewellyn, Toyota drivers Jimmy McRae and Bjorn Waldegard and Lancia's Mikael Ericsson would all be chasing victory on the RAC. Plus, sportscar legend Derek Bell was back for his second attempt! Through England, Scotland and Wales a mesmerising story unfolded, with the best drivers in the world falling foul of the conditions and the lead changing repeatedly. Could Alen overcome a huge time disadvantage to take his first RAC victory after 14 attempts? This highlights programme is packed with incredible action, in-car footage courtesy of Bell, Ericsson and Mark Lovell, interviews, and some hair-raising crashes.
