Roar: Lions of the Kalahari (2003)

This fascinating look at the inhabitants surrounding a waterhole in the Kalahari desert takes an up-close view of a lion and two lionesses. Highly protective, he is threatened by the presence of a nearby male who impinges on his territory. A number of other animals wander in and out of the frame, but it is the prowling lions who dominate the waterhole, with their strong physical prescience, and foreboding gaze seeing off any unwelcome intruders. Some of the scenes may not appease viewers with delicate stomachs, but as an unexpurgated portrayal of nature at its raw, brilliant best, Roar: Lions Of The Kalahari is unparalleled.
