Robinson Crusoe, the sole survivor of a shipwreck, found his way to a deserted tropical island and lived there for several years before making his way back to civilization. He had the ability to fashion the necessities of life out of his natural surroundings and develop special relationships with the creatures and plants around him. His ingenious methods of survival on the lush and alien island have been an inspiration since 1719, when the novel was first published.
