'Romance with a Double Bass' is a truly delightful film and an important piece of film history. Based on a short story by Anton Chekhov this project was one of John Cleese's first post-Python projects. 'Romance with a Double Bass' was the second writing collaboration for Cleese and Booth, and their first on screen appearance together, before they created the classic, Fawlty Towers. Double bass player Smychkov (Cleese) shows up early for the betrothal ball of the beautiful Princess Costanza (Booth) and whiles away the time skinny dipping in the local river. Nearby the princess is doing the same, but when all their clothes are stolen Smychkov helps the princess preserve her dignity by carrying her back to the castle in his bass case. Along the way love blossoms between the naked duo, much to the distaste of the princess's parents.
