Fase: Four movements to the Music of Steve Reich, the dance, is by no means a simple piece on which to give a film-maker's imagination free rein. Fase is a quite compelling choreography, which guides the spectator's gaze firmly, only to have him suddenly discover that in its order lies a deep emotion.
Thierry De Mey, who has worked on a number of Rosas performances, has approached the Fase project with verve. He has managed to turn the power of the choreography so as to create a film with an identity both authentic and independent. Fase, the film, in no way claims to compete with the dance, but explores it rigorously and precisely. In this way the film reinforces what was already present in De Keersmaeker's choreography. The film, like the dance performance, comprises four parts based on the four parts of Steve Reich's composition.
