Berlin from 1932 to 1946. The machinist Hans Behnke (Paul Esser) is capable and doesn't interest him in politics. Until one day his brother-in-law asks him to repair a printing press that produces anti-fascist leaflets. Betrayed by his own son Helmuth, who was brought up to be a fanatical Nazi in the Hitler Youth, Behnke is imprisoned. After the end of the war, the liberated father and the son returning home from captivity face each other. Helmuth has little hope that his father will take him in, but he takes him in his arms. Together they want to build a new life.
