Rudolf Nureyev was one of the most celebrated dancers of the 20th century. No male dancer ever had more influence on the history, style and public perception of ballet. Nureyev & Friends, filmed in HD at Le Palais de Congres in May 2013, features dancers from the world's finest ballet companies paying tribute to him in an exceptionally prestigious dance gala celebrating the 75th anniversary of his birth. Under the patronage of The Rudolf Nureyev Foundation, the performance follows the trail of Rudolf's life - Rudolf as a dancer, Rudolf as a choreographer and Rudolf as Artistic Director of the Ballet of National Opera de Paris. The dancers perform pas-de-deux and variations from the early days of his career with the Kirov Ballet, his own creations such as Raymonda and Manfred and important collaborations with other choreographers such as Sir Frederick Ashton and Hans van Manen. In his later years, Nureyev invented a new format Nureyev and Friends to perform programmes of works with small, specially assembled casts, hence this impressive Gala Tribute. With performances from award-winning principal dancers Maia Makhateli, Mathias Heymann, Aurélie Dupont, Tamara Rojo and Vadim Muntagirov and with the participation of The Ballet of the National Paris Opera, The English National Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, The Bolshoi, The Royal Ballet, The Kirov Ballet and The Berlin State Ballet, this is an evening to cherish.
