Synopsis:
Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Bela Tarr's epic rendering of Laszlo Krasznahorkai's novel, about the decline of Communism in Eastern Europe, is a unique and visionary masterpiece that defies classification and transcends genre. Set in a struggling Hungarian agricultural collective, a group of lost souls reeling from the collapse of their Communist utopia face an uncertain future, until the arrival of a charismatic stranger in whom they believe lies their salvation.
The collective's individual experiences and fates are gradually revealed in Tarr's immaculately composed, brilliantly photographed and bleakly comic tour-de-force, which confirmed his place as one of contemporary cinema's few genuine auteurs.

The first 2 hours were the worst, the second 2 hours they were the worst too. - Sátántangó review by PT

Bela Tarr’s attempt to make a film that takes longer to watch than the source novel takes to read. I know comparisons of films with the books they are derived from are usually irrelevant but this does such a massive disservice to Kraznahorkai’s excellent novel that this needs to be pointed out. Even on fast forward most of the scenes are glacially slow and will have you pleading for them to stop. Editing this down to 90 minutes might actually have made a decent film but someone misguidedly indulged the director. Whoever decided that Bela Tarr was some kind of genius (I missed that meeting) should be forced to watch this on repeat until the disc wears out.

Similar to watching paint dry whilst having needles shoved unexpectedly into one's eyes. - Sátántangó review by RB

Watched disc 1. I don't have a problem with grim, long-drawn out monochrome films per se, so decided to give disc 2 a chance as moderately intrigued to see how it all plays out. Watched disc 2, or rather half of disc 2. Mid-way through encountered a scene of animal abuse perpetrated by a child (child thereby also abused), clearly involving real suffering to the animal concerned. Sick to my stomach I pressed eject, put disc back in envelope and had a shower. Disc 3 cancelled. What kind of person thinks it's ok to cause suffering to living creatures in the name of their so-called art? An arrogant t****r, that's who.
