There is something very magical about steam trains, which brings out the child in everyone. Whether it is memories of a golden age when billowing white clouds of steam heralded the arrival of a locomotive or from stories read to modern youngsters who rarely even see a train let alone travel by one, the effect is the same, it's mesmerising. Hardly surprising then, that when British Rail started to consolidate its network, closing branch lines and condemning steam locomotives to scrap yards, railway enthusiasts the length and breadth of Great Britain joined together to preserve this most beautiful and vital part of the nation's heritage.
This programme looks at one of the steam societies that grew out of the decline in railway traffic, based in the dramatically beautiful Forest of Dean. Formed in 1970 when rumours of the line's closure began to circulate, the Dean Forest Railway Society worked tirelessly to collect and maintain rolling stock, track and associated artefacts that have enabled them to run the two and a half mile section which is open today. Take a step back in time and enjoy the romance and nostalgia of a journey by steam, through a stunning forest landscape, which adds an extra dimension to this glorious railway experience.
