On the back of the success of landmark dramas including Boys from the Blacks tuff, The Monocled Mutineer and G.B.H, in 1994 Channel 4 gave Alan Bleasdale carte blanche to find and mentor new TV writers. Of the four, Andrew Cullen's Self Catering, a location shoot of his original stage play, is the most out there - in every sense. Five survivors of a plane crash are marooned on a remote desert island. Clint' (Andrew Schofield) is the alpha male, foraging, building shelters, and seducing the women - even Joan' (Noreen Kershaw), a hairy-armpit feminist, falls briefly under his spell. Jane Horrocks is a dizzy Marilyn', while Jennifer Ehle's Meryl' is a fragile ingenue. The nerdy film buff (John Gordon Sinclair), who wants to be known as Henry' after his hero Henry Fonda, compares their perilous situation with a string of movie plots. Each castaway adopts the persona of their favourite Hollywood star. Lord of the Flies themes of isolation, power, social order and savage instinct play out in a succession of erotic, aggressive and comical encounters as we discover who will be top dog, and which of the survivors will be invited for dinner.
