In 1974, the abduction and rape of three women in West Palm Beach, Florida send police on a desperate search for a serial rapist. A few blocks away, they find the suspect's abandoned car. In the trunk is the last will and testament of Paul John Knowles - an escapee from Florida's Raiford Penitentiary. The car itself is stolen; it was registered to a man who was murdered two months prior. A nation-wide APB brings in calls from 37 different states. Police are stunned - in addition to serial rape, Knowles is wanted for the murders of 18 men, women and children in a three-month killing spree that spans the entire nation. During the massive manhunt that follows, Knowles murders a police officer and a Delaware businessman. Eventually, on November 19, Knowles is arrested and on December 18, 1974, Knowles offers to show agents where he hid his pistol, on the way there, Knowles attempts to escape, scuffles with agents inside the car and is shot dead by an FBI agent.
