Free spirited young Irish girl Anna (Prunella Gee) leaves her job as a servant and falls in with up-and-coming Manchester artist Nick Faunt (John Nolan). As they take up the bohemian lifestyle favored by artists in the city Nick is unwilling to make commitments - and Anna is a girl who comes with a lot of baggage. She has a four-year-old son, Brian, who is living with his 'Uncle Jacob' (Howard Southern). Now Anna dreams of taking him back . into her life and away from Jacob, while Nick finds himself more and more captivated by Jacob's aloof sister Rachel (Sharon Mughan).
