On the eve of battle, Shapre and the Chosen Men are given the task of turning the South Essex, run by incompetents and filled with soldiers that have never been in battle, into a disciplined fighting force. Whwn the South Essex loses its colours, Sharpe vows to save the honour of the regiment by capturing a French Imperial standard, an eagle. It's a monumental undertaking and one made harder by Simmerson's Lieutenants, who will stop at nothing to cut Sharpe down to size.
