During a time of civil war in feudal Japan, the ninja clans of Iga rent out their services as spies and assassins. As various warlords scheme against each other, the most powerful among them, Oda Nobunaga (Tomisaburô Wakayama), is on a mission to unite Japan under his rule while eradicating the ninja threat. Goemon (Raizô Ichikawa) is a brash ninja-in-training who is forced into action when Oda's forces wipe out his clan and murders his wife and child. As he carries out a carefully nurtured plan of robbery and assassination, Goemon changes the course of history while rising to notoriety as a scourge for Oda and his generals. The first two Shinobi films are directed by Satsuo Yamamoto, based on the novels of Tomoyoshi Murayama. Both men's previous anti-authoritarian works had landed them into trouble with censors and the law, and their subversive and revolutionary new take on the ninja would go on to become a landmark success.
