Jabez Stone (Alec Baldwin) is a desperate, down on his luck writer who reaches rock bottom when his close friend, Julius Jensen (Dan Aykroyd), finds success. Thwarted in his attempts to get his work published, he meets a beautiful stranger (Jennifer Love Hewitt) who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for his soul. Stone jumps at the offer. A book deal, money, women and notoriety soon follow. However, despite having it all, he is losing the friendship, respect and trust of those close to him. Realising that he didn't quite get what he bargained for, Stone begs to be released from the deal. He ends up hiring famed orator Daniel Webster (Anthony Hopkins) to fight his case in court. Thus begins an otherworldly trial against the Devil in the ultimate battle of wits in a fight over the fate of Stone's soul. The Devil and Daniel Webster is an original and delightful version of the tale of Faust, alternating comedy with drama, and leaving us with a great message. Jennifer Love Hewitt steals the show with her portrayal of a sexy and smart devil, while Anthony Hopkins puts in his customary top-notch performance. Kim Cattrall and Alec Baldwin both perform well, while Dan Aykroyd shows talent in his dramatic interpretation and is a good surprise.
