The 1963 film Cheryomuski (Cherry Town) sprang from the popular and commercial success that greeted Shostakovich's tuneful homage to the Broadway musical. A gentle satire on the lives and aspirations of young Soviets, the story follows the on-off romances of three young couples, as they battle bureaucracy, petty corruption and bizarre complications to acquire apartments in the sought-after "Cherry Town" - a new showcase estate in suburban Moscow.
