Bernadette Peters stars in this comedy based on Tama Janowitz's best-selling collection of short stories that defined the downtown New York art scene of the 1980s. Eleanor is an aspiring hat designer who lives with her successful artist boyfriend. The high cost of rent makes Eleanor and most of her fellow loft dwellers slaves to their relationships. If only they could afford to move, they could move on. This atypical Merchant Ivory film was made during the company's most creative and acclaimed period of filmmaking and continues their tradition of stunning photography, sets and costumes.
