- Ingmar Bergman won the Best Director prize and the Lead actresses deservedly shared the acting award at the Cannes Film Festival for this deeply affecting study of a three of very different women who meet at a maternity ward. Cecilia is struggling to overcome the trauma of a harrowing miscarriage; Hjordis has attempted to abort her unborn child; whilst Stina enthusiastically awaits the birth of her baby with her loving husband. As they share their psychological and physical sorrows, horrors and experiences, a strong bond grows between these erstwhile strangers.
