Kathleen Quigley (Helen Mirren) is shocked when her son is captured after a run-in with British troops in Northern Ireland. A life-long pacifist, she finds herself caught up in the political conflict when her son goes on a hunger strike. Together with Annie Higgins (Fionnula Flanagan), the mother of another prisoner, she must make a stand before her son dies for his beliefs.
