In the early 1920s, Gerald Brennan (Mathew Goode) travels across Spain, motivated by idealism and in search of inspiration for his writing. Settling in a small village he is soon the center of attention from his maid, Maria, her marriageable daughter, Angeles, and Paco, a man who decides to guide Gerald in the ways of the village and of love. Gerald sets his sights on Juliana, an attractive and sensual girl who fascinates and distracts him. Caught in a web of romantic entanglements, he soon learns the pleasures of physical love, but how far away from his class and country can he venture, and for how long?
