Tenor saxophonist Stan Getz (1927-1991) was nicknamed "The Sound" because of the rich, smooth, always melodious music that flowed from his instrument. Getz got his start as a teenager, playing with big bands in the 1940's. Over the course of his career, he played just about every form of jazz, becoming particularly important and influential to the bossa nova genre.
